First Laser Ablation Workshop at Expanded Facility a Success

FREMONT, Calif. (May 21, 2012) Applied Spectra hosted its first LA (Laser Ablation) workshop at the company’s new, expanded facility in Fremont, CA. The workshop was attended by analytical researchers from several major international universities and the US Department of Energy (DOE) labs. All attendees are specialists in the geochemistry and nuclear forensic fields.

The workshop’s technical discussion centered on the fundamentals of femtosecond LA and femtosecond LA-ICP-MS measurements to achieve high precision and accuracy in isotopic analysis. Attendees also discussed the latest advances in LIBS (Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy) instrumentation and the use of the technique for their analytical applications.

The technical discussion was followed by live LIBS and Femtosecond LA instrument demonstrations. Applied Spectra’s new facility features demonstration rooms for the company’s state-of-the-art RT100 LIBS and J100 Femto LA instruments, which were both used for the LA and LIBS workshop.

Workshop attendees included Dr. Bill McDonough, a distinguished geochemistry researcher from the University of Maryland. Also in attendance were Dr. Andrew Duffin and Dr. Greg Eiden from the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, who currently use ASI’s J100 Femto LA system with multi-collector ICP-MS for nuclear forensic analysis.
